Frequently Asked Questions

You have questions about the village, the sword and the shrine maiden. Here are the answers — and if something is still unclear, the best way to find out is to play. The full story is available in your browser, so the FAQ below covers everything you might want to know before you start.

Senren Banka (千恋*万花) is a Japanese romance visual novel developed by Yuzusoft and localized into English by NekoNyan. It is a story-driven game about a boy who breaks a legendary sword in a mountain village and is told to marry the local shrine maiden as compensation. It combines romance, comedy, folklore and mystery in roughly forty to fifty hours of reading.

Senren Banka is available to play directly in your web browser. Click the Play Now button in the header of this site (or the banner on the homepage), and the game opens on the Nutaku platform. You will need a Nutaku account, and the game is purchased once — there are no hidden fees or in-game gacha.

A single route takes roughly eight to ten hours to read at a comfortable pace. With four main heroine routes, two side routes and multiple endings, a complete playthrough of everything the game offers runs about forty to fifty hours.

Four main heroines each have a full route: Yoshino Tomotake, Mako Hitachi, Murasame and Lena Liechtenauer. In addition, two side heroines — Koharu Kurama and Roka Maniwa — have their own routes. Every route has its own ending song and its own resolution to the story's central mystery.

No. Senren Banka is a visual novel: the gameplay is reading and making choices. There are no battles, no resource management and no fail states. Your choices determine which heroine's story you follow and which ending you reach.

The game is available in English, Japanese and Chinese, so you can read it in the language you are most comfortable with. This website itself is available in English, Spanish, French, German, Polish and Japanese.

At heart, it is a love story with a mystery wrapped around it. The protagonist breaks the divine blade Murasamemaru, awakens the sword spirit Murasame, and is engaged to the shrine maiden Yoshino as punishment. Beneath the village's cheerful festivals lies a centuries-old curse tied to a sacrifice — and each heroine's route reveals a different piece of that history.

Senren Banka was developed by Yuzusoft and first released in Japan on July 29, 2016, as the studio's ninth title and its tenth-anniversary celebration. The English edition was localized and published by NekoNyan. The game has sold over one million copies and a manga adaptation was serialized in Monthly Comic Alive; an anime television series is scheduled to premiere in 2027.

Senren Banka is an adult visual novel. The browser edition on Nutaku is an 18+ product that contains mature romantic content. It also contains plenty that has nothing to do with maturity — comedy, folklore, festivals and genuinely lovely writing — but if you are under the legal age in your region, this is not the game for you yet.

Still Curious?

If you are on the fence: Senren Banka is one of the most beloved romance visual novels of its generation, and it earned that reputation the old-fashioned way — through writing, art and music that people still talk about years later. It is a game you read, not a game you grind, and the forty to fifty hours pass much faster than they sound.

The sword is in the stone, the shrine maiden has been informed of your arrival, and the village of Hoori is not going anywhere. The only question left is which story you want to tell first.
